- In het jaar des Heeren 1637 scheepte Nicolaas de Graaff, chirurgijn, zich in aan boord van de vaartuigen der Oost-Indische Compagnie. Het doel van zijn eerste reis was Batavia, Malacca en Goa . Sedertdien, en tot 1687, bezocht hij talrijke landen en maakte, of toch bijna, de reis om de wereld. Hij liet ons een volledig dagboek van zijn reizen na, in hetwelk hij zijn lotgevallen verhaalt en de streken beschrijft die hij bezocht heeft. Dit dagboek werd in 1701 te Amsterdam uitgegeven.
